Happy Birthday, Nikki McKibbin!
Nikki McKibbin was not only there from the very beginning of this American Idol juggernaut, but she made it to an extremely impressive third place on that first season. With her funky style and raspy voice, she was one of the original “rocker chicks” of AI. Nikki also showed that one can defy the odds by being in the bottom three week after week, as she was in the bottom six times, including her elimination! This record stayed in tact until this season, when Syesha Mercado tied it, and also ended up in third place.
After the show, producers wanted Nikki to go the country route, but Nikki wanted to stay true to her rock roots, so her debut album was postponed. In May 2007, she did release her first CD, called Unleashed, under the indie label Chenoa Records.
Among other things, Nikki is also returning to her “Idol” roots, and is set to sing two duets with fellow AI alums. One will be for a Christmas rocker album, and the duet will be with Alexis Lopez. The other will be a duet with RJ Helton, all to be set up through her indie label Chenoa.
Nikki lives in Fort Worth, Texas, with her second husband, her son (10), and stepdaughter (13). She also hosts karaoke every Wednesday night at her stepfather’s bar in Arlington.
